ISIN vs CUSIP

Which one to obtain?

ISIN codes and CUSIP numbers both serve similar features. ISIN codes are mainly used by countries other than the US or Canada, although both have ISIN codes as well. In the US the CUSIP number reigns as the most common securities code obtain during the CUSIP application process for American companies.

What is an ISIN

ISIN, or International Securities Identification Number, is a 12 digit code that’s sole purpose is to uniquely identify a security, such as a stock or a bond. It is mainly used, aside from identification purpsose per se, to assist with clearing and settling, such as trades. The CUSIP number also serves a similar function. A CUSIP number is a 9 character (alphanumeric) code and CUSIPs identify North American stocks and bonds and other securities. Like the ISIN code this helps with clearing and settlement of trades as well.
